The President in exercise of the powers conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, appointed Justice Hemant Gupta, senior-most Judge of Patna High Court, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court with effect from 29th October, 2016 consequent upon the retirement of Justice Iqbal Ahmed Ansari, Chief Justice, Patna High Court.
