National Law University, Jodhpur in association with Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co and Competition Commission of India successfully hosted the 8th edition of the NLU Antitrust Law Moot Court Competition, 2017. Eastern Book Company and SCC Online were the Exclusive Knowledge Partners for the Moot Court Competition.
This year’s edition of the NLU Antitrust Law Moot Court Competition, 2017 commenced with the inaugural ceremony conducted in the presence of the Hon’ble Chief Guest, Justice NN Mathur, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Poonam Saxena, the faculty and the participants. The participants soon were engrossed with the Preliminary Rounds. As Day 1 came to a close, the Judges were also impressed. The participants were amazed, intrigued and invigorated with new energy to argue the case they had been working on for three months. One after another, Reverse Preliminary 1, Reverse Preliminary 2, Quarters and Semi Finals took place. In a day, participants went all out, giving their best and eight teams emerged as the Quarter-Finalists. However, before proceeding with the Quarter Finals, the Second Panel Discussion on Competition Law was hosted. Now the Panel Discussion was an idea that was given wings to last year, in line with the aim to keep up with the most contemporary issues in Competition Law.
The theme of the Panel Discussion was the contemporary issue of “market disruptors” which is one of the most relevant debates in competition law in India today. Therefore, the attempt was to discuss this with the best minds in the field of Competition Law, who are currently involved in litigation on this exact topic. The Panel discussed the effect of the telecommunications sector boom that India’s traditional markets and laws were thoroughly unprepared for and how this fit into the existing concepts of Abuse of Dominance, predatory pricing and unfair competition practices. It was an interactive and thoroughly enlightening session.
The Panel Discussion was followed by the Quarter-Finals and the Semi-Finals, it was intense and hectic but the participants’ j
oy at being able to pull it off was evident in their smiles of relief. And finally the names of the teams proceeding to the Finals were announced. On the last day of the event, the finals were conducted. The finals saw a distinguished bench comprising of Justice S Ravindra Bhat, High Court of Delhi; Justice GP Mittal, Member, CCI and Mr John Handoll, National Practice Head, Competition Law and Senior Advisor, European and Competition Law, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co. The finals witnessed NALSAR, Hyderabad and ILS, Pune fight it out, giving their absolute best. The audience heard great arguments and speaking from both the teams. The round concluded with the ILS, Pune winning the finals. ILS, Pune swept the moot, winning the awards for Winners, Best Memorial, Best Student Advocate of the finals and Second Best Student Advocate. NALSAR was the Runners up.
