Alternative Dispute Resolution through Negotiation, Mediation and Client Counselling has become a regular and an important feature across law and management university campuses not only in India but across the globe, and for good reasons. They bring forth future leaders, attorneys, negotiators and policy makers and require them to reach an amicable consensus to a dispute without knocking the doors of the judiciary.
We at National Law School believe that the untapped potential of Alternate Dispute Resolution is waiting to be harnessed and NMC is one such initiative which attempts to spread awareness about ADR in India. In pursuance of the same, the Alternative Dispute Resolution Board of the National Law School of India University, Bangalore, presents the NLS Negotiation Mediation Client Counselling Tournament (NLS NMC 2017).
The vision of NMC is twofold. Firstly, to organise a tournament at par with other international negotiation and mediation competitions which would help law students hone their inter-personal skills and secondly, to familiarise aspiring law students with the area of ADR in order to motivate them to join us in our efforts of furthering the practise of ADR in the country.
The upcoming edition of the competition is scheduled for 4th-7th May, 2017. In furtherance of our endeavour we are expanding the scope of the tournament this year, which will be witnessing participation from more than 40+ colleges, 70+ teams and 200+ budding lawyers. The number of judges/panelists is likely to exceed 50. It is a unique initiative aimed at providing a platform to interested law students from across the globe to learn and hone their alternative dispute resolution skills in cross cultural settings. Started in 2015, the competition has fast garnered a reputation as an event that adheres to the highest standards. Previous two editions have seen more than 60 teams and 200 students participate, and have brought together lawyers and ADR experts from India and abroad.
The NLS NMC, is one of India’s leading ADR competitions. It is a testament to the quality of our event that the NLS NMC is one amongst a select few global competitions that conducts three ADR events simultaneously, that is, Negotiation, Mediation and Client Counselling and is a direct qualifier for the ICC Mediation Week, Paris and national qualifiers for the International Negotiation Competition. Indeed, as the ADR Board here at NLSIU, we hope to mould the NLS NMC, into India’s finest ADR competition.
The contestants will also get to interact and compete with students from various foreign universities in a cross cultural setting, thereby making it an enriching experience for them. The application process for NMC was rigorous and the universities were thoroughly vetted before the top 24 colleges for each competition were chosen, so as to raise the bar of the competition, promote excellency and make it challenging enough for all the participants involved.
The III NLS NMC is being conducted in collaboration with International Chamber of Commerce, International Negotiation Competition along with Singapore International Arbitration Centre, Centre for Advanced Mediation and Practice and Foundation for Comprehensive Dispute Resolution to name a few. The competition is being held with generous support from RPV Legal, Reddy & Reddy Law Firm with Eastern Book Company and SCC Online as the exclusive Knowledge Partners.
