Legislations or statutes, as commonly referred, is the primary source of law under the Indian Legal System. Laws are made for the smooth functioning of the society. Thus Law needs to be intelligible and transmit the purpose for which the law is made to the end user. Yet, several challenges are encountered by the legal professionals while applying and interpreting the statutes due to many factors, many shortcomings, which exist in the drafting process of statutes.
A training program in legislative drafting hopes to contain the wastefulness in legal drafting.
Institute of Advanced Legal Studies provides a forum where the students of law, lawyers, academicians, can have unique opportunity to exchange views and experiences with experts on the subject of legislative drafting.
After a successful course which was well-received by participants last year, the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (IALS), branch of Indian Law Society, Pune is offering a Certificate Course in Legislative Drafting for the second time this year too.
The certificate course consists approximately of 30 lectures and count on the expertise of few renowned members who were at some time or the other part of drafting of various statutes. The galaxy of the professionals who were a part of the programme held in the year 2017 were – to mention a few of them – Mr. T.K. Viswanathan, Law Secretary, Government of India; Prof. (Dr.) P. Ishwara Bhat, Vice Chancellor, Karnataka State Law University, Mr. B.R. Atre, Former Joint Secretary and Legislative Counsel for the Ministry of Law, Justice and Company Affairs and Professor N.K. Chakrabarti, Director, KIIT School of Law.
The purpose of the training programme is to promote an ethos amongst the participants about the necessity of drafting statutes in clear, simple and easy to understand language. This certificate course aims at capacity building of the participants in effective drafting of laws and also expose them to the essential skills that a good draftsman must hold.
Interested candidates are requested to register their names on or before 20th August 2018 by making a payment of Rs. 500 towards registration. This amount will be adjusted in the total course fees after the student takes admission to the course. This prior registration is a prerequisite as it will facilitate IALS management to plan the course efficiently. We are required to contact the resource persons well in advance and obtain their acceptance to be part of this programe.
Details about the Course:
* It is proposed to commence the course during December 2018 /January 2019.
* The course will contain 30 units approximately. Each unit will be of 2 hours duration.
* Timings may differ according to the convenience of the resource person.
Days: Monday to Saturday (subject to availability of resource persons)
Fees for the course: Rs.16, 949 + 18% GST = Rs. 20,000 Concessions to the needy students will be provided.
