Jamia Milia Islamia University organising National Seminar on “Rights, Concessions and Entitlements of Persons with Disabilities”.

A National Seminar (CRE Accredited) was organized by the Zonal Council Committee Northern Zone – III, Rehabilitation Council of India in collaboration with Enabling Unit, Jamia Millia Islamia on 28th March 2019 at Faculty of Law, JMI. The seminar was inaugurated by Dr. Aquil Ahmad, Director, NCPUL, who spoke from a rights perspective of entitlements to ensure inclusion. Prof. Ilyas Husain, Dean, Faculty of Education exhorted the participants on the need for spreading awareness among the masses on the rights of PWDs. Issues of training rehabilitation professionals and role of scouts and guides in creating mass awareness about the rights of PWDs were highlighted by Ms. Razia Begum, Deputy Secretary, Minority Affairs (Revenue), Govt. of NCT of Delhi. The mandate of ZCC was explained by Mr. Mukesh G. Gupta, Coordinator, ZCC (Northern Zone III).
The inaugural session was also graced by Faculty members from various departments of JMI, members of ZCC, Faculty members from University of Delhi and officials from Bharat Scouts & Guides. The seminar had a two-panel discussion, first of which was on the topic “Government policies, schemes, and Acts related to education.” In this session, Prof. Anil Aneja, Department of English, DU, spoke about the RPWD Act, 2016 and its implications, which was followed by Mr. Pradeep Kumar, Assistant Professor, Moti Lal Nehru College, DU, who highlighted the various impediments that arise in seeking the guaranteed rights. Dr. Mohd. Faijullah Khan, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Education, JMI spoke on personnel training and required educational policy changes to empower special educators to intervene effectively. The second-panel discussion was on “Child Rights and Disabilities; Law, Psychology & Media” which saw Special Judge POCSO, Karkadooma, Shri. Gurdeep Singh, speak about his dual role of being a parent of a child with disabilities and a judge presiding on judicial cases that impact the lives of children with or without disabilities. Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, as well as gender-based violence among PWDs, were the focus of discussion by Ms. Khyothunglo Humtsoe, Assistant Professor & Clinical Psychologist, CIC, University of Delhi. The session concluded with highlights of the role of media in addressing issues of PWDs by Mr. Abhinav Upadhaya, Principal Correspondent, Hindustan. The Bharat Scouts & Guides also gave a presentation about their objectives and the various activities are undertaken to achieve them. The seminar saw enthusiastic participation from teachers of Directorate of Education, Delhi, Bharat Scouts & Guides, MCD schools and special educators from JMI.
