Landmark Decision | Same-Sex Marriage | “Taiwan” becomes the first country in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage

As reported by media, Taiwan Parliament has taken a historic step by legalising same-sex marriage.

“In 2017, the island’s constitutional court ruled that same-sex couples had the right to legally marry.

Parliament was given a two-year deadline and was required to pass the changes by 24 May.”

The country’s top court ruled in 2017 that preventing same-sex couples from getting married was unconstitutional. It gave the government two years to introduce appropriate legislation or see a marriage equality law enacted automatically.

The significant step is in the direction of gender equality.

“Friday is also the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.”
