The Tamil Nadu National Law University is pleased to announce it will host a Memorial Roundtable to Celebrate the Life and Works of Prof. C.H. Alexandrowicz on June 30, 2019 at its premises. The Roundtable is a part of the five-day long Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on International Law that we are organizing at our campus from June 29 to July 3, 2019.

Prof. Alexandrowicz is special to India in more than one ways. He was probably the only academic in the immediate post-Independence era to have made the journey from the West to India where he remained for more than a decade and helped in establishing the Department of Legal Studies, a heritage department, at the University of Madras in the year 1951. During his tenure as the Head of the Department of Legal Studies, University of Madras from 1951
to 1961, he started a Master’s degree course in International Law, which was the first of its kind in India. The successive generation of legal academics and practitioners in India have repeatedly admitted that Prof. Alexandrowicz has played a phenomenal role in the development of legal education in India.

Prof. Alexandrowicz engaged in the writing of global history of law that disengaged from traditional parochial and regional histories. There is a pressing need to bring his scholarship to the front to counter the pervasive penchant for Eurocentrism in the History of International Law. His scholarship is in many ways prescient and offers us a refreshing view with a deep historical perspective that needs to be reinvigorated and presented before the young generation of inquisitive and non-confirmist researchers.

Against this backdrop, the purpose of the Roundtable is to provide a platform to the present generation of experts in International Law from all over the country to come together and engage in commemorating the scholarship of the extraordinary luminary whose life and work has been a source of inspiration for generations of scholars in International Law all over the world since the beginning of the second half of the 20th century.

Some of the noted experts who are confirmed to speak at the Roundtable include Prof. B S Chimni, Former Chairperson & Professor, Centre for International Legal Studies, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi; Prof. V G Hegde, Chairperson & Professor, Centre for International Legal Studies, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi ; Prof. M Gandhi, Dean, VIT School of
Law, Chennai; Prof. Manoj Kumar Sinha, Director, Indian Law Institute New Delhi; Dr. Prabhash Ranjan, Assistant Professor Faculty of Legal Studies, South Asian University, New Delhi.

All of the aforementioned noted academics are also resource persons, among many others, at the five-day long Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on International Law and will be conducting customized sessions in niche areas of International Law during the entire length of the programme. Forty participants from all over the country, most of whom are early-career academics and research scholars, have been shortlisted to participate in the
programme and will be attending the event in residence at TNNLU for all five days.

We believe that it will be our privilege to organise this Roundtable as a befitting tribute to the extraordinary legal luminary in the land of Tamil Nadu, the place which has deep-rooted and indelible ties with Prof. Aleandrowicz.
