COVID-19 | Return to Normalcy: Law Schools Try to Chart-out Plans for Examinations

Earlier the exams were scheduled to be held in staggering manner with each batch coming to the University campus and physically writing the exams. Owing to the present situation, the University has planned to base their entire evaluation for all the students on project submission and viva.

NLU Delhi

If lockdown is lifted, then exams for final year students will be held from 20 June. If lockdown persists until July, then online exams to be held for both theory and practicals.

For students in their intermediate semesters, exams are scheduled to be held in July. If lockdown persists till  then, then students will be evaluated based on present semester’s internals and previous semester’s externals.

The scheduled date for reopening of the next semester is 3rd August. The Administration has directed students to take up online mode of internships and if not possible, take part in online courses.

1. Online exams have been already conducted for students in their final semester.

2. All the students currently in their Fifth Year of the B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) Programme, who were originally allowed to appear for any examination along with the End-Semester Examination of junior batches for Winter Semester 2019-2020 or required under the Academic and Examination Regulations 2012 to appear for the repeat examination for any course along with the Winter Semester 2019-20 Repeat Examination, would also get their scores for the concerned subjected calculated in accordance with the formula outlined in the preceding paragraphs. They would, however, have to submit internal components for the respective courses (for the purpose of calculating their score out of the 50 marks referred to in Paragraph (2) hereinabove). To such end, they are requested to contact the Academic Section and/or the concerned faculty member for assignment of project topic etc., if they have not done so already.

For the students in their intermediate semester:
1. Marks shall be assigned to students on the basis of a combination of 50% for Internal Components and 50% to be assigned on the basis of the average percentage of marks obtained by the student in all the courses up to Monsoon Semester 2019 for which results have been declared so far.
2. In addition to this, all the students would be provided with the opportunity to sit for an improvement examination for each of the papers, once the University reopens and offline examinations can again be conducted alongwith the Regular examinations.. In case a student does opt for such an examination for any course and gets their marks and grades replaced with that secured via such improvement examination, then the concerned student’s transcript would not reflect any ‘I’ indicator besides such marks/grades secured. This would ensure that any student whose interests might have been adversely affected by such substitute evaluation methodology gets an opportunity to improve upon their existing score thus calculated.
3. In accordance with the UGC Guidelines, all registered students shall be provisionally promoted to the next class for the current Academic Year assuming all have attended their all classes during the closing of the university due to COVID-19, subject to 2012 B.A.LL.B. Regulation. This provision shall however not apply to students who failed to register for their batch after being detained or who failed to attend any class in the Winter Semester 2019-2020 or who were debarred in more than two subjects on account of lack of attendance in the Monsoon semester 2019-2020. 4. Students who have more than two backlogs from Monsoon Semester 2019-2020 or shall fail to pass more than two subjects after allotment of marks in accordance with the formula outlined in Paragraphs (1) to (3) above in the Winter Semester 2019-2020, shall be required to write special assignments in the concerned subjects.

This unanimous decision of the faculty was placed before the Academic Council of HNLU by way of an e-mail resolution and a majority have endorsed this as a fair and equitable solution.
