On 17.10.2022, it has been notified that President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Justice Dr. DY Chandrachud to be the 50th Chief Justice of India with effect from 09.11.2022.

Justice Dr. Dhananjaya Yashwant Chandrachud’s father, Justice Y.V. Chandrachud served as the 16th Chief Justice of India and interestingly, he was the longest serving CJI in India’s history at 7 years and 4 months.

♦Did you know? In the recent privacy judgment, K.S. Puttaswamy v. Union of India, [(2017) 10 SCC 1] his son, Hon’ble Dr. Justice D.Y. Chandrachud found occasion to correct a historical wrong and held that the ADM Jabalpur decision was seriously flawed and ruled against it.

After practicing law at the Bombay High Court and Supreme Court of India also serving as the Additional Solicitor General of India, Justice Dr. DY Chandrachud, was appointed as Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on 29.03.2000.  On 31.10. 2013, he took oath as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court until he was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court on 13.05.2016.
